A speed machine is up for grabs in the USA right now with the bidding at a low $55,000, but still some time before the auction end. Called Nebulous Theorem III, it is a rocket-like racer built from the ground up for setting acceleration record on salt lakes.
Otherwise known as a streamliner, the car was built by Lake Bonneville star driver Jack Costella in the mid-1990s. Five years ago, the vehicle managed to set a new record in its own competition category by hitting 619.597 km/h (385 miles per hour). It was able to make 658 km/h (409 mph) in qualifying runs. Whoever buys it will get a carrier trailer.
Technically, the vehicle is based on a space-frame with composite bodywork. A Chevrolet Small Block V8 toils under the hood coupled with a Ford C4 three-speed automatic transmission.
The front wheels are installed one after another, and a three-stage brake chute system is implemented for gradual deceleration. The cockpit only seats the driver, who uses levers to control the streamliner, and is devoid of any modern comforts.
