Mecum Auctions will put up a unique set of 16 Chevrolet Corvette safety cars, each of which participated in the Indianapolis 500 race, for sale somewhere in May.
A safety car (or a pace car) is a vehicle that enters the racetrack in dire emergencies, when the race needs to switch to a slower pace for a period of time.
The auction lot consists of Chevrolet Corvette С3, С4, С6 and С7 pace cars produced over the course of the past 39 years. The vehicles issued in 2013 and 2017 are of particular interest, since neither has ever been on sale before. The winning bidder will be entitled to produce exact copies of all cars thus acquired.
Mecum Auctions will first attempt to sell the entire collection as a single lot. Failing that, the entries will be auctioned off one by one. Prices are being kept secret at the moment.
The entire set of Chevrolet Corvette pace/safety cars issued to date is currently being held by famous collector Keith Busse. It took several decades for him to locate, purchase and bring together all 16 vehicles.
