89-year-old car designer finally unleashes the Corvette Sting Ray of his dreams

Peter Brock, the mastermind behind the original Corvette Sting Ray that came out in 1963, has revealed what that car would have looked like if he had had free reign over the project.

Apparently, Brock was just 21 years old when he submitted his first Sting Ray draft for the Chevrolet execs to review in 1957. It was discarded, and while the car was eventually released six years later, it no longer represented what its designer had envisioned from the start. Only now, at the age of 89, did Brock finish working on his perfect vision of the Sting Ray.

Many of you will notice how similar the car is to the original while also being its own thing. The split window in the back and the Californian Blue exterior are both nods to the first Sting Ray, but the exterior is much cleaner and all chrome décor is black instead of silver. The proportions are about as close to the original as they get, but minor things like fake air vents and stamped details have been removed. Riding on a bespoke Art Morrison chassis, it’s not a restomod, either, but an all-new creation.

It’s also not built to be a garage queen, if that LT4 V8 under the hood is any indication. Tuned to deliver 735 PS (725 hp / 541 kW) to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, it delivers a modern driving experience in retro packaging. Complementing that experience are suspension components borrowed from a C7 Corvette and Wilwood brakes.

Predictably, the interior is likewise all-new with climate control, Sparco bucket seats, a custom steering wheel and a digital dashboard bearing Brock’s autograph.

You may have seen this car at the latest SEMA show, but it was easy to miss among all the other exhibits. What matters is that it is now headed to a Mecum auction in Florida. No one has ventured forth with a price estimate yet, but we won’t be surprised to see something wild in the upper six-digit area.
