Chevrolet Silverado, a U.S. full-size pickup truck first introduced at the 2018 Detroit International Motor Show, has received a version equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine. It is now the only vehicle of its kind on the international market to feature a V4 turbo engine.
Back at the show premiere, Chevrolet promised to release the Silverado with six different engines, but only talked about three of them. Apparently, they have since decided to ship the base version of their pickup with a cheaper seventh option.
The engine in question is 2.7 liters large and rated at 314 hp (234 kW). It features an aluminum piston assembly with 100 mm (4”) travel and dual 20 MPa turbochargers. The unit supports variable displacement, has a start/stop system, and comes with an electric pump as well as direct fuel injection. Driven by it, the pickup truck accelerates 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 7 seconds.
Chevrolet has also revealed some details about the high-end 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines that come with the new Silverado. Each of these comes with on-demand cylinder deactivation, which allows for greater fuel efficiency. Their performance varies between 360 and 426 hp (268 – 318 kW).
Last but not least, the engine palette for the model includes mid-range V6s 4.3 and 5.3 liters large. These also support variable displacement, but can only deactivate half of their cylinders at a time.
