The U.S. subcompact car market has lost another representative: the Chevrolet Spark, the most affordable vehicle in the segment with a $13,600 USD starting price, will leave production for good in August 2022.
Chevrolet does not comment on the decision, but it seems obvious that the model wasn’t too popular and the company needed to free up resources for the more demanded SUVs, crossovers and pickups.
The original Spark debuted first as an early concept in 2007, then as a production-ready car in 2009, and finally reached production in 2012. It is in its fourth generation now and shows rather dismal sales dynamics with a 26.9% year-to-year drop in 2021 over 2020. In absolute terms, the company only sold 24,459 units in 12 months.
