The AutoX is a Gen. 5 self-driving car technology from China

Chinese company AutoX, which specializes in the development driverless taxis and commercial transports, has held a presentation in Shanghai dedication to the fifth generation of its autopilot tech – and it looks impressive, indeed.

The Gen. 5 autonomous driving system incorporates five dozen sensors, 28 cameras, 6 LIDARs, 4 radars, and – crucially – a CPU rated at 2,200 TOPS. The abbreviation stands for ‘trillion operations per second’; Tesla cars max out at 144 TOPS.

It took two and a half years for the company to develop and test the system in a variety of conditions, and designing the CPU was the single most challenging task.

The AutoX was of the first driverless car systems worldwide to gain public road admission. The company has been testing it on 25 driver-free Chrysler Pacifica minivans in Shenzhen since the beginning of the year (see video).

In addition to Chrysler and BYD, Honda has also taken interest in the AutoX system recently, having signed an agreement with the Chinese tech company.
