Citroen ushers in the Basalt, an affordable coupe-like CUV

The Citroen Basalt is a coupe-shaped crossover utility vehicle targeting the developing markets of India and South America. The car seen here is still technically a concept, but the company says the final production version will look almost the same when it ships in the second half of the year.

Starting with the front end, it resembles the C3 and C3 Aircross models already available on the same markets. Unlike those, the Basalt rocks a bigger and bulkier front grille with accentuated air intakes and a dividing bar in the middle. The rear end looks completely new with its sporty slanted roofline, integrated spoiler and elaborate rear bumper. Black body kit parts, large wheels and skid plate imitations at both ends result in a “rugged” look, although it’s mostly there just for show.

No interior shots or technical details have been revealed so far. Rumor has it the production Citroen Basalt will inherit its platform and powertrains from the C3 lineup. If true, it would mean a 1.2-liter turbo three-pot in the base spec rated at 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque. The company plans to electrify the C3 family next year, so a hybrid version could be coming soon, too.

In Brazil, the newcomer will most likely see the most competition from the Fiat Fastback. In India, the Tata Curvv revealed in early February could be its main rival. At any rate, Citroen considers both markets strategically important, so we can safely look forward to some attractive pricing.
