Continental, a company primarily known for its car tires and spare parts, occasionally surprises us with a hi-tech invention or two. This year’s CES Las Vegas was no exception.
Continental unveiled a 10-inch display that it co-designed with Swarovski AG based on microLED technology. It surpasses the current generation of displays in both peak brightness and contrast while taking advantage of an ultra-hard crystal screen to ensure long service life. The crystal glass pane sports the company’s signature gemstone facets and should treat its users to ‘a brand-new experience’, the press release states.
Continental believes that such displays may later become the killer feature of many a premium vehicle interior, offering a completely new mode of displaying data. You can see what it means in the gallery here: the semi-transparent glass creates an illusion of a colorful image floating inside a translucent frame.
The creators behind the tech claim that its sheer novelty value will lead to users considering the display as the single biggest port of interaction between human and car. Promotional slang aside, though, it remains unknown whether Continental has actually secured any agreements with automakers on using this tech in production cars.
