Seat established the Cupra performance sub-brand a couple years ago, and this Formentor scheduled to arrive in mid-2020 is the first Cupra-badged production vehicle. Based on the shots, the coupe-like SUV is barely any different from its concept version shown a year ago.
The company started working on what it boldly called ‘the rival of Porsche Macan’ in 2015 and produced the final concept in 2019. The car has virtually the same interior as the Leon, except for the digital odometer, which is moved to the middle of the dash.
In all likelihood, the SUV will share the powertrain with its technical siblings, specifically the Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia RS iV, and Volkswagen Golf 8. This means a 1.4-liter gasoline four-banger assisted by an electric motor. The net result is 245 hp (183 kW). The battery comes rated at 13 kWh, and the six-speed DSG transmission is the only one available.
That said, the new Cupra Formentor will most likely get quite a few ICE engines as well, including a 2.0 TSI with 190 hp (142 kW) and a 2.0 TDI rated close to 200 hp (150 kW). These might ship with six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmission types and AWD. Aside from this, Cupra promises us electronic diff locks and shock absorbers.
