Werner Tietz, Cupra Brand VP for Research and Development, has starred in a video showing the company’s UrbanRebel prototype in action, dispelling the rumors that the car lacked a production-grade powertrain.
The video, which was apparently filmed in the industrial center of the marque, shows the four-meter-long hatchback with an elaborate body kit running impressively fast on its unique wheels. Back when it premiered in September, many dismissed the concept car as a pure designer’s fantasy with no production prospects. Cupra itself helped proliferate this opinion by calling it ‘a radical take on a city EV.’ Well, this has now been proven wrong.
The company says the three-door hot hatch has 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW) at its disposal and needs 3.2 seconds to zap to 100 km/h (62 mph) from standing still. Production will not begin until 2025 or so, however, and it is only reasonable to expect various simplifications and feature cuts.
