Cupra Born EV debuts on official photos

It has been over two years since Seat unveiled its el-Born Concept, but the production car dubbed the Cupra Born never came out in 2020 as promised. Good news, though: it will premiere next Tuesday, May 25.

On the images revealed with the announcement, there is no missing the similarities with the technologically related Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback. Having said that, there are some interesting details on the Born, such as narrower headlights, sharp-looking creases on the hood and the fenders, and a large front grille in the bumper.

Aerodynamic performance was the top design priority, but designer Jorge Diez says creative freedom was also high on the list, giving birth to some of the engravings and color combinations.

Technical details aren’t there yet, but surprises are unlikely to happen. Being based on the MEB platform, the car will likely inherit the powertrain of the VW ID.3 Tour/Pro S. This includes a single rear-mounted motor rated at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque and a 77-kWh traction battery. Outfitted like this, the car should be able to sprint in 7.9 seconds and cover 544 kilometers (338 miles) of WLTP-rated range. A special Sports drivetrain mode is expected, but that’s about it for the differences.
