Cupra Formentor debuts on official terms

As expected, Seat-controlled car marque Cupra has unwrapped its first independently designed vehicle, the SUV called Formentor. Read on for full specs and details.

The car is nearly identical to its concept version revealed last year and borrows its name from the Formentor Cape in Mallorca, Spain. The carmaker emphasizes that its body design follows the curves of stones found on the Mallorca Island. It sports 2,680 mm (8.8 ft.) of wheelbase and has 450 liters (15.9 cubic feet) of trunk space.

The interior leans towards the Cupra Leon. There is a 12-inch digital dash screen, a large central infotainment display, a sports steering wheel and ergonomic seats. Copper-tinted accents inside complement the exterior colors.

Options include traffic sign-aware adaptive cruise control and a feature called Exit Assist that combines blind zone monitoring with a warning that sounds whenever opening the door may be hazardous.

The Formentor is being marketed as an SUV-shaped alternative to hot hatchbacks, so it comes appropriately motorized for its market segment. The recently unveiled Volkswagen Golf GTE provides it with a hybrid powertrain, which consists of a 1.4-liter turbo-four gasoline mill and a single electric motor. The nominal output comes close to 245 hp (183 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. There is also a gasoline version, which uses the 2.0 TFSI of the range-topping Cupra Leon, getting 310 hp (228 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) out of it. The transmission is seven-speed dual-clutch auto in both cases, but only the non-electrified Formentor gets AWD. Sprint times remain to be measured.

The Cupra Formentor should hit the showrooms in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2020, and the prices are still pending.
