Cupra Tavascan is coming, but you will have to wait for it

Seat spun off the Cupra brand for its performance cars a couple of years ago, and has revealed the SUVs Ateca and Formentor since then. The former received a facelift this summer, while the latter only came into spotlight this spring packing an optional hybrid system. Next in queue is the all-electric Cupra Tavascan – but it won’t be emerging until at least 2024.

According to CEO Wayne Anthony Griffiths, the model will follow in the tracks of the Tavascan Concept unveiled at the last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but it will not be coming within the next three years. Cupra has a busy schedule as is with the Formentor launch later this year and that of the el-Born hatchback next year. He did not confirm the rumors that these cars would be produced at the Volkswagen/JAC Motors joint venture.

The Tavascan derives its name from a Catalonian village located near the Spanish border with Andorra and France. It is a coupe-like SUV with aggressive looks, 22-inch wheels, four bucket seats and a rotating central display. It uses the MEB (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten) architecture by Volkswagen and uses dual electric motors jointly rated at 306 hp (228 kW), allowing a sprint to 100 km/h in under 6.5 seconds. Its 77-kWh battery grants it up to 450 kilometers (280 miles) of WLTP-rated range.

On a related note, Volkswagen and Skoda have already unveiled their respective MEB-based SUVs, the ID.4 and the Enyaq.
