Daihatsu launches Mira Tocot kei car in Japan

More good news for Japanese car enthusiasts: Daihatsu has launched domestic sales of a new kei car model named Mira Tocot, which should eventually replace the Mira Cocoa on that market. You don’t necessarily have to buy it, though, as it will soon be available via the Times 24 carsharing service.

The new Mira Tocot actually bears a slight resemblance to the Mira Cocoa, especially in the department of the weirdly styled lighting. The exterior palette mostly consists of pastel colors, while the interior makes use of grey and beige. All of the above, plus the soft seat upholstery and interior finish, makes the miniature vehicle really cozy and comfortable.

The car is built on the TNGA architecture and comes equipped with two sonars and a semi-autonomous driving mode which uses a stereo 3D camera for pedestrian recognition and safer acceleration in urban traffic conditions. Its hood cover conceals a three-cylinder engine with 0.6 liters of displacement room. The modest unit only produces up to 52 hp (39 kW) and 60 Nm (44 lb·ft) of torque and works in conjunction with an IVT box.

The front-driven Daihatsu Mira Tocot costs the rough equivalent of U.S. $10,000, while the AWD version is closer to $11,000. If you are in two minds about buying it, feel free to rent it in the Times 24 carsharing service and try it out first.
