A 2015 Daihatsu Copen converted into an SUV for off-road driving went up on sale in Japan not long ago. The Kei car had over 60,000 miles (96,000 km) on it, but the seller asked for 1,698,000 JPY ($13,000) – almost as much as a new Copen costs in stock form.
Compared to the stock car (see video), the off-roader received a substantial ground clearance boost and a set of 15-inch OZ racing wheels shod in Yokohama Geolandar tires. The body received guards and skid plates all around, as well as some auxiliary headlamps and a roll bar of sorts at the back. Mounted on the trunk door, the latter can be used for mounting canisters and sand tracks. Towing eyes were added to the front grille and a fake air intake appeared in the roof.
Inside, Recaro seats are the only notable addition. The donor car was an Xplay spec with a lightweight black body kit all around.
As a Kei car, the Copen kept its 0.66-liter gasoline engine rated at 64 PS (63 hp / 47 kW) unchanged. The CVT transmission and front wheel drive also remained stock. An HKS exhaust system was the only technical modification in this department.
