11th-gen Daihatsu Hijet breaks cover with new tech and features

Daihatsu has premiered the eleventh generation of the Hijet Kei van in Japan, which now comes based on the DNGA platform with a stiffer body, softer suspension and a slew of modern electronic systems.

Like its predecessors, the new Kei car is limited by law at 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,890 mm tall with 2,450 mm between the axles. In order to maximize interior space, the designers made it boxier than ever on the outside.

The cabin remains downright ascetic in the lower trims, but the layout is new. Higher trims offer infotainment displays sized 6.8 – 9.0 inches across, a reversing camera, keyless entry, and a package called Smart Assist including lane control, adaptive cruise control, and collision prevention. The sliding side doors are now automatic.

In its naturally aspirate state, the stock 0.66-liter engine produces 46 horsepower and 60 Newton-meters of torque. Opting for a turbo raises the figures to 64 hp and 91 Nm. Five-speed manual is the default gearbox, but buyers can now opt for a CVT with greater fuel efficiency. Automatic is no longer an option. AWD remains on the list of premium features and benefits from a new, lockable coupling.
