Old Datsun 280ZX can be your ride of choice for grocery trips

Having automotive classics brought to their second life through restomodding can be a costly affair, so it pays to do the job yourself. Elvis, from Canada, decided to try his hand at this business – and here is what came out.

The source car is a 1982 Datsun 280ZX. The new body kit consists of a metallic bumper, flared metal fenders, a front splitter and side skirts, among other things. There is a very prominent ducktail spoiler in the back, too, while the rear bumper is absent. Aero Race NASCAR wheels sit inside the arches (the owner says they are not ‘technically’ street-legal), and the whole is painted in several vivid colors dominated by turquoise.

Powering the homemade build is the standard 280ZX non-turbo six-pot with only a few modern touches. Back in its glory days, the mill could produce up to 147 PS (145 hp / 108 kW) and 212 Nm (156 lb-ft) of torque. We doubt that it is much more powerful now, if at all.

Elvis admits that steering and suspension could use some improvement and that the result is best viewed from farther away due to all the shoddy craftsmanship and poorly aligned parts. On the plus side, it was his first project and a valuable experience. Those who might be interested in the car will find it on sale for $18,500 CAD. What would you use it for? The name of the build, ‘Home Depot Special’, should provide a clue.
