De Tomaso moves from Italy to the USA

The resurrected Italian car marque made quite an entrance at the last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with its all-new P72 supercar. The production was slated to begin in 2020, but it now turns out the company never found a suitable location for it in Europe and may have to relocate to the United States.

De Tomaso plans to establish its headquarters in North America along with a design center and an assembly factory. The final location has not been chosen yet, but the company reports ongoing negotiations with the governments of a number of states. The final decision should be reached within six months, and the P72 should go into production in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Hong Kong-based foundation Ideal Team Ventures helped revive the De Tomaso brand. The corporation also owns Apollo Automobil, Roland Gumpert’s niche automotive company that designed the new De Tomaso P72 based on its proprietary Intensa Emozione platform. In turn, Roush supplied the 5.0-liter Ford Mustang V8 supercharged to deliver 700+ hp (522+ kW) and 825 Nm (608 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission is six-speed manual.

The De Tomaso P72 is expected to come out in a batch of 72 units priced from €750,000 ($890,000 USD) each. The company reports that the demand has already exceeded the offer.
