DeLorean DMC-12 successor shows up on video

Italdesign has released a video teasing a mysterious new car along with a mention of the 54th birthday of DeLorean. The same teaser appeared on the twitter page of DeLorean Motor Company, the current brand rights holder. It seems that we now know the name of the car and its estimated availability date.

The video shows a sporty front fascia with raised gullwing doors behind it, like on the original DMC-12. The hood line with the instantly recognizable creases can be seen as well. Finally, a stylized lightning flashes on a V-shaped element of the front grille.

In the accompanying description, the manufacturer says that the car is called EVolved, an obvious hint at its electric nature. It is also official that it is coming sometime in 2022.

Coachbuilder Italdesign is likely handling the design part of the project: Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the founders, was responsible for designing the original DMC-12.

Who will handle the production remains unclear, however. We learned last April that Italdesign and Williams (UK) agreed to join efforts on designing a new EV platform supporting supercars rated up to 1,360 PS (1,341 hp / 1,000 kW) with a wheelbase up to 3.1 m (10.17 feet) long.

Italdesign talked about reviving the DMC-12 last January, saying it would be nice to bring the model back in time for its 40th birthday. The original car was produced in 1981-1983.
