Dodge Demon tries out its new 1,000hp Hellephant V8 on a dyno stand

With 852 hp (635 kW) hitting the road violently, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is by no means a slouch in its production form – but the owner of this example wanted more still.

The Demonology team swapped the stock engine out for a custom crate engine called Mopar Hellephant V8. The documents state that the mill produces 1,000 hp (745 kW), but the first dyno test showed that 944 hp (704 kW) actually reached the wheels of the Dodge Demon. Assuming 85% transmission efficiency, that would mean 1,100 hp (820 kW) at the crank.

As impressive as the build seems, there’s no avoiding the obvious question of “why?” The massive $30,000 crate engine would’ve been a better fit for nearly any other vehicle, especially one that is old or exotic. The Demon is extremely capable as is, and taking its stock motor past 1,000 hp would have been much easier than going for the swap. Oh well, to everyone their own!
