Stellantis is working on a new modification of its 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine featuring Hurricane turbos that comes to replace the company’s fuel-hungry V8s. According to Automotive News, the performance baseline will be at 527 PS (520 hp / 388 kW), enabling its use in the gas-powered Dodge Charger and Challenger when they debut.
The corporation previewed the new 3.0-liter V6 in the spring of 2022, saying that production plans existed for two versions – one rated at 406 PS (400 hp / 299 kW) and the other one at 507 PS (500 hp / 373 kW). The new report makes it look like a third, range-topping version is in development now. It remains to be seen when it may reach the market, but with Stellantis being vocal about its continued investment in ICE powertrains, it is probably just a matter of time.
Rumors say that the company might be simultaneously designing a smaller, four-cylinder modification of this engine with 2.0 liters of displacement. It may slot in under the hood of Stellantis’ cheaper cars. However, the automaker says it finds the currently used Pentastar V6 cost-efficient and easy to maintain enough not to replace it with a different engine. Instead, the company will upgrade and electrify it for use in hybrid vehicles.
