Dodge assembled and sold over 96,000 Chargers in 1968, so the one seen here is anything but unique. Still, it is special in the sense that its former owner put it into a garage back in 1980 and let it sit there until recently. The unlikely time capsule has now been sold for U.S. $30,100.
The seller never mentioned in the listing just why the Charger had stayed abandoned for nearly half a century. What matters is that it ended up being one of this world’s precious few Chargers of that era to have preserved all of its original equipment. The serial numbers of all parts are factory-stock, nothing has been restored or otherwise modified, and even the paint coat has stayed original. You could almost call it a time traveler… Almost.
The issue is, no one had apparently taken care of the car throughout these decades. The entire body has been half-consumed by rust, the vinyl roof cover is gone, and the seat upholstery has dried up and burst at the seams. The seller points out that you can still shift gears without issue, but admits that the engine and the brakes appear not to work.
In the end, whoever bought this unlikely barn find really only has two options for it. One is restoring it to peak condition using OEM parts wherever possible. The owner points out that most of the exterior panels are salvageable, at least. The other one is turning it into a fancy restomod and trying to sell it for a profit.
In case you needed a reminder, the 1968 Dodge Charger had a 5.2-liter V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. It produced 230 PS (227 hp / 169 kW) and 460 Nm (339 lb-ft) of torque.
