Rumor: Next-gen Dodge Charger stays true to ICE, but cylinder count goes down

Dodge has decided not to make the next generation of its Charger and Challenger muscle cars electric-only, but will be replacing the V8 Hemi with a more compact turbocharged engine, Mopar Insiders reports citing unofficial sources.

There will be an EV in the lineup inspired by the last year’s Charger Daytona SRT Concept (see the gallery and the video). The production car is being designed to be close to the concept version, but with four doors instead of two and a special body kit to remind us of the legendary progenitor of the Charger series dating back the 1960s. The company allegedly intends to advertise the Charger EV as a standalone model, rather than a modification, and to sell it with the ‘Daytona SRT’ suffix attached.

As for the petrol-guzzling lineup, it will shift from using eight-cylinder engines to a Hurricane-series six-cylinder turbo. In its top implementations, the mill can produce more than 507 PS (500 hp / 373 kW).

Dodge has not provided any official information yet. Mopar Insiders hopes that the company will reveal more during this year’s NAIAS show in Detroit in mid-September. The production of both muscle cars will likely start in 2024.
