The joint enterprise between FAW and Volkswagen is readying a new large, coupe-like SUV for launch in China. Dubbed the Tavendor, it comes closest to the Talagon (see video) in terms of size and tech.
As well, the car seems to be a direct competitor to Volkswagen’s own Teramont X, yet another full-size crossover utility vehicle produced at the SAIC-VW factory in China right now. All three models have the same wheelbase length of 2,980 mm. The Teramont X is 4,917 mm long, the Talagon is the longest with 5,152 mm, and the newly announced Tavendor slots in between them with 4,936 mm. It looks like the difference is largely owing to purely stylistic touches.
AutoHome, which published these initial patent photos of the SUV, points out that it sports an aerodynamic body with a bulky rear spoiler and plenty of chrome all around. One of the images shows a special modification called R-Line, which adds aggressive bumpers and redesigned exhaust tips to the mix. Unlike the Talagon, the Tavendor will not be available as a seven-seater.
Only one engine has been announced so far for certification purposes, and it is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 186 PS (183 hp / 137 kW). Other FAW-VW engines are expected to be available, too, and the flagship spec will most likely be rated close to 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW).
Sales in China are set to begin closer to the end of the year.
