Sotheby’s plans for the next auction include selling this unique prototype racecar called the Ferrari F40 LM Concept. Michelotto specifically built the vehicle for René Herzog, a professional racing driver, around 26 years ago. Some say the starting price might be as high as U.S. $6,000,000.
René Herzog bought his Ferrari F40 LM Concept in early 1990s. The car wasn’t permitted for use on public roads, but Ferrari used it as a test mule for the street-legal F40 LM series.
Three years later, Herzog sold his ride over to GT Racing. Shortly thereafter, the Pilot-Aldix racing team acquired it to compete in the 24 Hours of Le-Mans. The driver ended up with the 5th position in the total ranking, while the car was judged the fastest-going vehicle in the GT1 category. The Ferrari F40 LM Concept scored 2nd in qualification runs, and the Pilot-Aldix team ended the season ranking 6th in its own league and 12th in the overall standings.
Compared to its mass-produced counterpart, the Ferrari F40 LM Concept had its engine boosted to 720 hp (537 kW). This enables it to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.1s, a full second below the street-legal F40.
