A Ferrari 512 M rumored to have been an endurance racer once caught on fire and burned down on the Watkins Glen International racetrack in the United States, reports Motor1.
Unofficial reports are coming in that it was this car that Samuel “Sam” Posey drove as part of the NART team 53 years ago. NART, short for North American Racing Team, was established by Ferrari importer Luigi Cinetti specifically to promote the Italian brand in North America. Among other accolades, that car won bronze at the 1971 Le Mans marathon.
The cause of fire remains unknown. A fuel system malfunction cannot be ruled out, especially since the photos evidence the biggest flames coming straight out of the engine bay in the back, housing a 5.0-liter V12. The driver was able to avoid injury, but the future of the supercar is uncertain.
