Gooding & Company to sell the unique blue Ferrari 500

There is only one racing vehicle in the entire history of Ferrari that was painted blue, rather than the trademark red, and that is the resplendent 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II. Gooding & Company will be holding an auction for it in August.

The racecar had initially been built for French racing driver François Picard and sported a livery executed in the colors of the French national flag. Picard piloted the vehicle during the Paris Formula One Grand Prix, after which the car went to Italian racer Gino Munaron.

Gino then handed it over to Scuderia Ferrari, and it became that team’s first and last vehicle to be painted a color other than red. It has to be said that the Italian team achieved some pretty good results with their blue Ferrari 500, including 5th position in the general standings of the GP Venezuela in 1955.

58 years ago, having changed hands a few more times, the car ended up in the hands of Robert Phiillips. He has spent months repairing all of its worn parts, from the chassis and the body to the engine, and has even participated in a few minor tournaments since.

The starting price is unknown.
