The prestigious International Engine of the Year competition has been around for two decades now, but things have become increasingly predictable lately. Just as everyone expected, the winner’s title went to Ferrari F154 V8 3.9 for the third time in a row.
This engine series usually offers between 670 and 720 hp (500 – 537 kW) in terms of performance and ships with the Ferrari 488 family of vehicles.
Another Ferrari motor, the F140 GA V12 with 6.5 liters of displacement room and 800 hp / 600 kW power output, claimed the prize in the category “Rookie of the Year”. The latter is dedicated to engines that have only been around since the last year. The 600 hp / 450 kW strong turbocharged BMW M5 engine ranked second, while the 3.0 V6 Mercedes-Benz M256 motor came third.
Perhaps the only unexpected victory was scored by Volkswagen 1.0 TSI in the “1.0 Liter to 1.4 Liter” category. Most observers expected the award to go to the Ford Ecoboost 1.0 engine, just like it has done for many years.
