Ferrari adopts new lacquering tech

Ferrari, a famous Italian sport and race car manufacturer, has implemented an innovative vehicle lacquering method which involves low-temperature drying. No other manufacturer had used this technology before.

The method, called Low Cure, has been researched by a team of PPG Industries scientists. It involves several stages: first, the car body is coated with a regular paint. Then, a transparent varnish is applied and dried at 100 °C (212 °F). The widely adopted method involves drying at 150 °C (302 °F).

The company has managed to lower the required temperature owing to the use of a new hardener agent, which improves the adhesion between the paint and the varnish and has hydrophobic properties.

The new painting technology can be used for simultaneous treatment of the bodywork and the carbon aerodynamic parts, which had previously required two separate painting processes.
