A 56-year-old Ferrari 250 GTO gets sold for $48.4M

The Ferrari 250 GTO will go down in history as the single most expensive car ever sold at an auction. Put up for sale at U.S. $33,000,000, it ultimately went for $48,405,000.

This breaks the U.S. $38,155,000 record set by another Ferrari 250 GTO five years ago.

The Ferrari 250 GTO series included 36 cars, out of which only 12 have survived to this date. This particular car was assembled in 1962 and was one of only 7 cars to benefit from the Series II GTO upgrade package. It scored 15 victories in prestigious international races.

It should be noted that some cars fetched even higher prices at non-auction sales. For example, famous car collector David McNeil spent U.S. $80,000,000 earlier this year to buy yet another Ferrari 250 GTO held in a private collection.
