Is Ferrari preparing a successor to the F40?

Rumors abound that the Italian supercar maker will be unveiling a one-off vehicle called SP42 in a few days’ time.

The car will allegedly inherit the design philosophy of the iconic F40 (shown in our gallery here) and share the engine with the F8 Tributo. The latter comes equipped with a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 720 PS (530 kW) and uses seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

This won’t be the first project of this kind for Ferrari. The automaker built the unique SP38 a couple years ago based on the 488 GTB Coupe chassis, but with brand-new body details and lighting. Earlier examples include the P540 Superfast Aperta, SP12 EC, 612 GTS Pavesi, Superamerica 45, F12 TRS, and SP 275 rw competizione.

The original Ferrari F40 came out in 1987 and celebrated the company’s 40th birthday. It was the last vehicle built when Enzo Ferrari was still alive and the first road car that could hit 320 km/h (199 mph).
