1,000-PS, Nardo Grey Ferrari F40 up for sale at Sotheby’s

Tuning timeless automotive icons is a rare practice, because their value diminishes in proportion to the number of aspects fiddled with. This unique Ferrari F40 Competizione might make an exception, however.

The car came out in 1989 and was explicitly labeled by the manufacturer as a vehicle not intended for any kind of aftermarket modification. A couple of years after buying it, the owner felt adventurous and modded the suspension, the brakes and the body, painting the latter in a shrill yellow tint.

The non-stock F40 then proceeded to participate in races for the next decade and a half, gaining new modifications as it carried on. Three years ago was the first time someone decided it was time for a complete restoration. Fuel tanks and some suspension parts were replaced and a fire extinguisher added to the cabin. The car then went on to another owner who sent it to Maranello for a Ferrari partner firm to overhaul.

In the end, what you see here is an iconic supercar that looks new with a Nardo Grey finish, drives like new and conceals a tuned engine under the hood capable of something like 700–1000 PS (690–986 hp; 515–735 kW). No specific measurements were made.
