Alain Prost’s Ferrari F40 set to bring home up to €3 million

A Ferrari F40 whose original owner was quadruple Formula 1 champion Alain Prost will go on sale in May expected to fetch between 2.5 and 3 million euros. The car has gone through several owners who had barely driven it, so it still has under 4,700 km (3,000 miles) on the odometer despite being 33 years old.

The manufacturer presented Prost with a single F40 when the star driver transferred from Scuderia into McLaren. Prost never used it, though, and soon sold it.

The buyer, a collector of Ferrari products, asked the pro racer to sign the supercar. The autograph on the roof was then sealed with transparent lacquer. The current seller admits that it has not survived in full to this day, but claims that traces of the signature can be seen.

One of the subsequent owners replaced the standard speedometer with another version displaying miles instead of kilometers. He had intended to drive the supercar in the UK. The modification did not prevent the F40 from later receiving the Ferrari Classiche certificate of authenticity.

Throughout the years, the Italian company had produced a touch over 1,300 F40 units in a number of modifications (see video). The street-legal version utilized a 2.9-liter V8 boosted to 478 PS (471 hp / 352 kW) and 577 Nm (426 lb-ft) of torque. It could sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.7 seconds and maxed out upon reaching 321 km/h (200 mph).

If the auction estimate proves accurate, this F40 will become one of the world’s most expensive examples ever sold.
