Early last year, an ad popped up on eBay, offering to buy an original 6.3-liter V12 engine taken straight out of a Ferrari LaFerrari for U.S. $325,000. Apparently, the deal never happened, because a few days ago the seller came back with the same unit, priced at a ridiculous $800,000 this time around.
Aside from three abysmally blurred photos, there is little factual information available on the naturally aspirated mill. The seller claims it has only seen 20 miles (32 km) of use, which just might mean that it was scavenged from a wreck immediately after an accident. The owner declines comment.
There is more shady stuff going on, though. The particular V12 depicted here lacks its original wiring harness. Unless it is present but omitted from the photos, installing and actually using the engine may prove impossible. Other mild-hybrid components, such as the traction battery, the regenerative brake system and the transmission, also appear to be missing.
Now, if the seller had the entire powertrain at his disposal and was ready to haggle the price down to more realistic levels, we would say he had a non-zero chance of selling it. The way things stand, though… you know.
