Spied: FIAT testing the 2nd-gen 500е

Car spotters have spontaneously discovered prototype copies of the second-gen FIAT 500e sitting in the vicinity of Auburn Hills (Michigan, USA), where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. has its HQ and technological center.

The compact urban cars were likely all-electric, as evidenced by the lightning icon under the windshield.

The discovery is in line with the recent announcement of the second generation by FCA. Both cars are wrapped in thick test mule camouflage, so we cannot make any design-related conclusions. You may watch the video to check out what the first gen looks like, though.

In an earlier interview, FIAT CEO Michael Manley said the Number 500 is going to stay recognizable in terms of appearance, but get brand-new hardware and tech. For one, FCA has developed a brand-new EV platform specifically for the model. The company also plans to use the same platform for a hybrid-powered 500e later.

The next-gen FIAT 500e will most likely be revealed at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. Pricing is currently estimated at €32,000+.
