The Fiat 500 and Panda compacts will soon become available with mild hybrid powertrains. The production has already begun, the carmaker reports.
The Fiat 500 Hybrid will start shipping in February, and the Panda Hybrid will follow in March. Neither model is particularly new: the 500 has been around for 13 years, and the Panda turns ten this year.
The mini-hatchbacks share the chassis and tech and come powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine assisted by a 12V starter/generator. The peak output equals 70 hp (52 kW), the carmaker claims.
Neither car can run on battery alone, but the small electric motor will assist the main engine during acceleration and when the start/stop system is enabled. This will result in better overall fuel efficiency. Regenerative braking is also included.
To further optimize fuel consumption, Fiat made changes to the gear ratios of the standard six-speed stick shift.
In March this year, the Italian carmaker will also be unveiling the brand-new Fiat 500e EV at the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. The electric hatchback will be produced alongside the regular Fiat 500.
