Italian sculptor Nazareno Biondo has purchased a huge block of natural marble to craft a precise copy of the iconic Fiat 500 urban car. Apparently, he isn’t doing this for the art, either: once the sculpture is complete, it is going to be dumped into a landfill.
Biondo wants to attract public attention to one of the most pertinent issues in the modern society: more specifically, how people tend to consume way too many commodities and leave too much waste behind. Things end up losing their intrinsic value, he says.
This is one of the reasons why Biondo is using a circular saw to hack away carelessly at a 15-tonne (16.5-ton) piece of marble. Once the life-size replica of the Fiat 500 is complete, it is going to be taken to a landfill at once. After all, don’t we all, who are infected with the consumerism virus, do exactly the same?
Nazareno Biondo is famous for creating painstaking marble copies of everyday things. His earlier works included a Coca-Cola tin, a plastic bottle and even a Vespa scooter.
