First EV-charging highway section built in the USA

A company named Electreon and the authorities of Detroit have commissioned the first portion of a highway in the United States capable of auto-charging the batteries of the electric cars driven on it. The same technology will soon be integrated into other roads throughout Michign, CarBuzz reports adding that there are critics as well.

The test stretch is roughly 400 meters (1,300 feet) long at this time. It uses coils placed beneath the road surface to transmit electricity. Only EVs capable of wireless charging can benefit from it in any way. The company emphasizes that the electric field is completely safe for all other vehicles, as well as animals and pedestrians.

According to CarBuzz, such an innovation would probably come in handy on city streets where both regular EV drivers and delivery businesses could benefit from it. The residents of Detroit have already criticized the initiative, saying that the money would have been better spent on general road repairs or improving the existing public transports.
