U.S. car manufacturer Ford will introduce a new all-electric crossover SUV based on the Ford EV architecture before the end of the year, an insider source claims. Allegedly, the company will only unveil a concept version of the car in 2019, followed by market launch in 2020. Once out, the e-SUV will mainly have to compete against the Tesla Model Y.
The source also reports that Ford Team Edison is responsible for the development of the model, allegedly named the ‘Mach-E’, and that it will look similar to the Mustang series.
The expected driving range is estimated at 600 km (375 miles), and the production will likely take place in the Ford’s Mexico facilities.
On a more official note, it has been announced earlier that Ford was pursuing several other EV projects. One of these, an unnamed car based on the C2 architecture, will go up against the Tesla Model 3 and the Chevrolet Bolt in a fight for customer attention when it enters the market. On the whole, the company plans to invest at least 4.5 billion USD in the R&D of environment-friendly vehicle tech until 2020.
