Aki Kalke, from Finland, has turned his ancient Ford Anglia ride into a very memorable, if unusual, hot rod that appears to be pieced together from scrap metal. Care for a closer look?
The car rolled off the assembly line in 1962, and had seen quite some use before its owner left it idle in the garage for 15 years. It was ultimately sent to a scrap metal press, but Aki Kalke noticed it and saved it just in time. He wanted to carry out a large-scale restoration project, but ended up doing much more than that. Have a look at the photos, and you’ll see the interior is all-metal, just like the body.
The man even purchased a CNC mill to have full control over the shape of the metallic parts he needed for the car. Note especially the pentagonal steering wheel, the coarsely brushed surfaces and the three pedals adding up to form “AN GL IA”. We are also told that he bought some IKEA seats to replace the worn-out stock ones.
It might look like a rat, but the car actually boasts air-ride suspension, custom 15-inch wheels and a brand-new silvery radiator grille. It even has a paintjob, although its greyish metallic tint suggests unpainted aluminum surfaces at first.
An engine swap rounds off this truly magnificent project. The one-liter Ford engine makes way for a superior 1.3-liter Toyota mill with unspecified power.
