Will Ford produce its own Skyline?

As it turns out, Ford Motor Company has recently applied for the registration of a trademark ‘Skyline’ in the Land Vehicles category in the USA. What could it possibly mean?

Nissan never offered its famous Skyline sports car in the United States, except under the Infinity badge since the eleventh generation came out in 2001. In turn, Ford never used the word ‘Skyline’ in its models, although there were a few ‘Skyliner’ cars back in the mid-20th century. These were convertibles based on the Crestline, Fairlane Crown Victoria, Fairlane 500 and Galaxie coupes.

Seven years ago, Ford named a Transit-based luxury show car a ‘Skyliner’ – watch the attached video if you don’t remember. The company dubbed it ‘a business jet on wheels’.

Why would Ford need to trademark the name ‘Skyline’ in America? Your guess is as good as ours. It also remains to be seen whether the application is granted.
