A 1949 Ford Tudor evolves into an insane BMW-powered hot rod

Maniacs Garage has made a compelling case for its choice of name by releasing the Born49ain, a sophisticated restomod based on a 74-year-old jalopy and a plethora of more recent vehicles.

The car was purchased for a mere $1,000 from a tuner who also said he wanted to build a hot rod like that, but only got around to chopping the roof by 180 mm (7 inches). Once they had the car, the Maniacs Garage team started looking for a suitable cheap chassis to base the build upon. They had browsed through multiple crashed Mazda RX-8 and Nissan 350Z candidates, but ultimately decided to go with a 2008 BMW 335i which an insurance company sold with a salvage title.

Once the Ford Tudor body was detached from the frame and the BMW torn down to its bare carriage, the tuner found out that the dimensions of these two parts were close enough to merge them into a whole – a lucky coincidence that simplified the rest of the build. The bodywork still needed numerous local modifications, such as flared arches, extended side sills and new bumpers. The team stripped the entire paint coat from the exterior and made sure to treat it roughly for a ‘rugged-yet-functional’ final look.

Interior highlights include BMW controls, an impressively sized gear lever fashioned out of a mountain bike handlebar and Status seats. Leather and Alcantara were used for the trim.

The stock BMW 3.0-liter I6 continued its duty in the engine bay. Maniacs Garage upgraded it with a custom turbo kit based on an oil-cooled, snail-shaped Garrett turbocharger sticking out of the hood. The result is estimated at 635 PS (625 hp / 460 kW).
