In early 2022, Ford Motor Company submitted a patent to the U.S. Patent Office describing a trailer designed for electric vehicles to enable charging them up on the go. The media have only published it now, so let’s take a closer look.
The company proposes using a trailer to top up the battery pack of the vehicle towing it, as well as to power up multiple external appliances – useful at camping or construction sites, just to name a few examples. Last but not least, such a trailer can double as a mobile backup power source for households and other infrastructure objects.
The documents state that the trailer can also be outfitted with one or more electric motors of its own. However, these motors will be used solely to ease maneuvering – something a dedicated controller will be responsible for.
Another proposed device consists of a sunlight intensity sensor and a tent that automatically unfolds to protect the batteries from overheating. Nothing has been revealed regarding any potential production plans.
