Ford opens a €70M Weather Factory in Germany

The Ford Motor Corporation has invested €70,000,000 in the construction of a climate simulation center it calls Weather Factory in the city of Cologne, Germany. The automobile manufacturer plans to use the facility for testing its prototype cars in a variety of challenging weather conditions.
The Weather Factory features a number of constant-temperature rooms and three wind tunnels. The first of these will enable Ford researchers to conduct durability tests of engines, tubes and other vehicle units and parts during wind squalls, hurricanes and rapid altitude changes (up to 5,200 meters / 17,000 ft.). No other wind tunnel in existence can replicate the same set of conditions.
The second one will let Ford see just how sharp temperature changes can affect various heating and cooling systems. The third one can be used for heavy rain/snow simulation with the corresponding reduction in the viewing distance. There, the research department can test various engine start scenarios and calculate the time needed for the interior of the vehicle to warm up after being left outside in the cold for a while.
Ford gave no comment on whether it had already tested certain models at the Weather Factory or whether the results of such tests will be disclosed to the public at all.
