Ford loses $270M on defective rearview camera repairs

The latest recall campaign that had Ford bring back a cool 169,277 vehicles, including Lincoln Aviator, Ford Bronco, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Transit models, reportedly cost the corporation U.S. $270 million.

The issue manifested in the rearview camera signal suddenly disappearing from the display when reversing. A solid black or blue background replaced the real-time video feed, potentially leading to a collision.

The investigation revealed that corrosion damage of an internal camera connector port could be the issue: once it rusted through, it started losing the signal. Other potential causes included the displacement of the connector port due to a manufacturing error and a software error in the image processing unit.
