Rare French-made Ford Comete goes on sale with a wee little V8 down there

The Ford Comete was designed specifically for Europe and produced in France with some curious small-displacement V8 options. This example dating back to 1952 is on sale right now.

The Comete was based on the same platform as the U.S.-made Ford Vedette. It featured per-wheel spring suspension at the front and leaf-suspension at the rear, as well as drum brakes all around. Most of the cars made were coupes (watch the video for an example), but a few convertibles reached the market, too.

All cars came equipped with a V8 of one kind or another, but while the topmost spec benefited from a 3.9-liter mill, the most basic car made do with just 2.2 liters of displacement (later upgraded to 2.4 liters). A four-speed manual transmission sent the torque to the wheels.

The model was designed by Pinin Farina, a coachbuilder from Turin, and the production was handled by Facel.

The example on auction has all the OEM mechanical parts in place, but comes without any documents, making us whether the 68,000 kilometers (42,253 miles) displayed on the odometer are its true mileage or not. Furthermore, both the interior and the body are due some major repairs, so we would not expect it to sell for much despite its rarity.
