An anonymous buyer rumored to have come from Cheshire County, England has paid £722,500 for the Ford Escort RS Turbo that once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales.
Lady Diana used the vehicle in 1985–1988. Ford assembled only around 5,000 such vehicles for the market of Great Britain, finishing every single one in white. However, Diana specified this example to be repainted in black. The car currently has a touch over 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) on it.
A radio station and an indoor sideview mirror were added to the car to assist Diana’s bodyguard. The RS Turbo radiator grille was removed and replaced with that of a standard Escort model for a more discreet look.
Powering the retro coupe is a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine rated at 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW). When new, a car like this could sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in around eight seconds.
