The ongoing global microchip shortage shows no signs of relief, and while many branches remain affected, the automotive industry probably suffers the worst. Air conditioning in the new Ford Explorer is the latest victim of the chip deficit.
According to Automotive News, Ford confirmed ditching the rear seat HVAC option from the 2022 Explorer range at a recent NADA meeting. The manufacturer said it was investigating ways to remove certain features from certain trims that it would be possible to re-implement via dealerships later when the crisis blows over.
This is very far from being a precedent, of course. General Motors already had to strip many Cadillacs of their parking assists and ship Chevrolet and GMC vehicles without heated seats. Jeep delivered the new Grand Cherokee without the much-hyped Quadra-Lift suspension, and BMW had to trim down on infotainment touchscreen features.
