Meet the new Ford Explorer EV, an electric five-seater on Volkswagen tech

Ford has introduced an Explorer EV for Europe that has nothing in common with its U.S. counterpart, runs on MEB Volkswagen Group underpinnings and will go on sale soon starting from €45,000.

The production will take place in Köln, Germany. The buyers will be able to choose between RWD and AWD variants.

From the technical perspective, the five-seat SUV is a clone of the Volkswagen ID.4. It sports a boxier exterior in comparison and is slightly smaller at under 4.5 meters (the ID.4 is 4.58 meters long). This led to a reduction of trunk space from the original 543 to 470 liters. For wheels, customers can browse through aerodynamic options sized from 19 to 21 inches large. Two new exterior colors are available: Arctic Blue and Vibrant Blue My Mind.

The trim levels are laconically called ‘Explorer’ and ‘Explorer Premium’. The former gets keyless entry, steering wheel and seat heating, driver’s seat massage, two-zone HVAC, a wireless charger pad and a hands-free tailgate. The 15-inch SYNC Move touchscreen can be pushed out of the way to reveal a lockbox.

Charging the battery from 10 to 80 percent takes 25 minutes, the company says. The driving range was announced earlier – up to 500 km (310 miles). Driving aids take advantage of 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 cameras and 3 radars, allowing the car to change lanes automatically, among other things.
