Among other thing, Ford is the main special vehicle provider for the U.S. Police Force. The manufacturer currently builds custom sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks and even minivans for police purposes. A reworked Ford Police Interceptor Utility with the Ford Explorer SUV at its base will be the next addition to the family.
The car was revealed to the law enforcement agencies during a closed event a few days ago, followed by several new teasers and some technical specifications.
The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility will be based on a new modular platform with longitudinal engine layout and permanent rear-wheel drive (AWD will be optionally available for all trim levels). In contrast, its predecessor came front-driven and had a transversely-mounted engine.
The police car will also get a hybrid drivetrain for greater fuel efficiency. Cops are now going to be able to chase criminals for 40% longer than before, meaning annual gasoline savings of $3,000+ per car.
Apart from the above, the new Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility is going to be faster and more maneuverable than its regular counterpart, but no exact figures exist to confirm these claims.
Cars will roll to their respective owners starting in May 2019 at the earliest; nevertheless, Ford is already taking pre-orders.
